  AbstractThe experimental determination of ionization and appearance energies is discussed, together with the calculation of heats of formation of ions. Results are presented for the ions [CnH2n+1]+, [CnH2n+2N]+ and [CnH2n+1O]+. The low temperature (∼350K), low energy (12.1eV) mass spectra of some alkanes, amines and alcohols are presented and discussed.
