Novel derivatives of phenylethylamine, having general formula: ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or a lower alkyl, are disclosed, to be used in the therapy of diseases of the digestive apparatus, particularly gastric and/or duodenal ulcers. The novel derivatives of phenylethylamine are prepared (a) from a compound of formula (II) ##STR2## by reaction with potassium cyanate, in the presence of an organic acid; (b) from the compound of formula (II) which is converted to the corresponding phenylcarbonic derivative by reacting with phenylchloroformiate and then with ammonia (c) from a compound of formula (IV) ##STR3## which is converted to a compound of formula (V), the latter being converted to the desired derivatives (I) by treatment with aqueous alkali.
