    Polyarylene thioethers are easily prepared by an oxidative polymerization of an aromatic compound of the formula (I) wherein R¹, R², R³ and R⁴ are each independently a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a lower alkyl group or a lower alkoxy group, and Y is a hydrogen atom or a group of the formula (II) wherein R⁵, R⁶, R⁷ and R⁸ are each independently a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a lower alkyl group or a lower alkoxy group and X is -O-, -S-, a methylene group or an ethylene group with a sulfidizing agent in the presence of an acid and an oxidizing agent, or in the presence of an acid, a catalyst for oxidative polymerization and oxygen, or in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst.

    A preparation process of a fluorine substituted aromatic compound comprising reacting an alkali metal or alkali earth metal salt of an aromatic compound having a hydroxy group with an organic fluorinating agent is disclosed. As a representative fluorinating agent, a bis-dialkylaminodifluoromethane compound, for example, 2,2'-difluoro-1,3-dimethylimidazolidine, is exemplified. According to the process, an industrially useful fluorinated aromatic compound, for example, a fluorobenzene, a fluorine substituted benzophenone, a fluorine substituted diarylsulfone can be prepared with ease in economy without specific equipment.

The present invention further provides a kit comprising a collection of tags capable of attachment to a support and binding partners capable of binding selectively and detectably to the tags, to generate an identification unit for the facile determination of the structure of a compound of interest by determining the reaction history and/or structural characteristics of the compounds that are encoded by the identification unit.

    The invention features a sort computer which interfaces with a sorting device in order to control the sorting of beads on a bead by bead basis. The invention further features novel methods for the directed synthesis of encoded libraries of oligomers, e.g., oligonucleotides, on beads. These methods allow the synthesis of libraries that are sufficiently large to permit complex genomic analyses to be carried out. New methods of using the encoded libraries also are described.
