Ruthenium complexes such as Ru(COD)(COT) [COD = cyclooctadiene, COT = cyclooctatriene], catalyze the dehydrohalogenative coupling of vinyl halides with olefins to give the corresponding substituted dienes. Even the sp2-carbon-chloride bond of beta-chlorostyrene is activated by ruthenium catalysts.
