    Provided is a method for producing a ruthenium complex comprises the step of reacting a ruthenium compound represented by general formula (1): [RuX(L)(PP)]X   (1), wherein Ru represents a ruthenium atom; X represents a halogen atom; L represents an arene; and PP represents an optically active bisphosphine, with a carboxylate salt represented by general formula (2): R 1 CO 2 M   (2), wherein M represents a monovalent cation; and R 1 represents a group selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups, haloalkyl groups, phenyl groups optionally having a substituent(s), 1-aminoalkyl groups and 1-amino-1-phenylalkyl groups, to produce a ruthenium complex represented by general formula (3): Ru(OCOR 1 ) 2 (PP)   (3), wherein R 1 represents the group selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups, haloalkyl groups, phenyl groups optionally having a substituent(s), 1-aminoalkyl groups and 1-amino-1-phenylalkyl groups; and PP represents the optically active bisphosphine.

    A ruthenium-phosphine complex having a 2,2ʹ-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1ʹ-binaphthyl or its derivative as a ligand and carboxyl groups bonded to the ruthenium atom is of the formula: where X is H an amino, acetylamino or sulfo group; R is a H or Cl-4 alkyl; R₁ and R₂ each is a Cl-9 alkyl, halogenated Cl-4 alkyl, phenyl, phenyl substituted with Cl-4 alkyl, Cl-4 α-aminoalkyl, or a C7-10 α-aminophenylalkyl group, or R₁ and R₂ together form a Cl-4 alkylene group; and n is 1 or 2. 17 specific complexes are disclosed. Synthesis is by treatment of a complex wherein the portion outside the bracket is Ru₂Cl₄ . N(C₂H₅)₃ with a carboxylic acid salt.

    There are disclosed compounds of the general formula The heteroatom X is preferably oxygen, but may have other values. The group W is preferably a carbonyl group, but may have other values. The preferred heterocyclic ring is thus a 4-oxo-4H-1-benzopyran ring. This may have a wide range of R₂, R₃, R₆ and R₇ substituents. Y is a linking group, chosen from a wide range, but including -COO- , -CONH- , -O- , -SO₂- and -SO₂NH-. Z is an alkylene chain, and B is a complex amine. These compounds and their prodrugs, enantiomers, diastereoisomers, N-oxides and pharmaceutically acceptable salts are useful for the treatment of hypertension and urinary tract troubles associated with benign prostatic hypertrophy, and for the treatment of other diseases.
