    This invention is directed to water-in-oil emulsions of water-soluble polymers and to a process for making such emulsions. The emulsion comprises (1) a discontinuous aqueous phase containing a water-soluble polymer which aqueous phase is dispersed as colloidal size particles or droplets in (2) a continuous oil phase wherein the emulsion contains an emulsion stabilizing amount of a water-soluble salt and an emulsifying amount of a water-in-oil emulsifier, said salt added prior to polymerization to form the water-soluble cationic polymer. The water-in-oil emulsions are characterized in that the water-soluble polymer is a cationic polymer and the water-soluble salt is a salt of a monovalent anion. The process for preparing the water-in-oil emulsions comprises (1) forming a stable water-in-oil emulsion (monomeric precursor) containing at least one water-soluble monomer in the aqueous phase which is dispersed in a continuous oil phase, said emulsion containing a stabilizing amount of a water-soluble salt and an emulsifying amount of a water-in-oil emulsifier, and (2) subjecting the monomeric precursor to conditions sufficient to polymerize the monomer. The method is characterized in that at least one water-soluble monomer is a cationic monomer and the water-soluble salt is a salt of a monovalent anion. The water-in-oil emulsions of this invention are employed to supply flocculants to many substrates including, for exam- pie, sewage, cellulosic fibers and fines for retention and freeness: metal or treatment plating wastes, and coal tailings.

    This invention is directed to a water-in-oil emulsion polymerization process for preparing polymers of water-soluble monomers and to the water-in-oil emulsions prepared by the process. The process comprises subjecting portions of the emulsion to varying rates of shear during emulsion formation. Emulsions comprising water-soluble polymers prepared by this process contain a discontinuous aqueous phase having two or more droplet size distributions. These emulsions can have high polymer solids, reduced oil content, low bulk viscosity and high stability.

    This invention is directed to a method for preparing a concentrated stable water-in-oil emulsion containing at least 40 weight percent of a water-soluble polymer, which method comprises as steps of (1) forming a stable water-in-oil emulsion containing at least one water-soluble monomer in an aqueous phase which is dispersed in a continuous oil phase, said emulsion of monomer containing an emulsifying amount of a water-in-oil emulsifier; (2) subjecting said emulsion of monomer to conditions sufficient to polymerize the monomer thereby forming a stable water-in-oil preconcentrate emulsion of a water-soluble polymer; and (3) concentrating said preconcentrate emulsion by removing at least a portion of the water from the perconcentrate emulsion. The invention is characterized in that prior to or during step (3), an inverting surfactant is added in an amount sufficient to reduce the bulk viscosity of the preconcentrate emulsion, but less than that which destabilizes the preconcentrate emulsion or the concentrated emulsion. The concentrated emulsions prepared by the process of this invention are superior to conventional emulsions in that they have increased polymer solids, reduced oil content, lower bulk viscosity and greater stability than are characteristic in the conventional emulsions containing about 30 weight percent of solids. In addition to their utility as additives in drilling muds, fracturing fluids and fluid mobility control agents in enhanced oil recovery methods, the emulsions prepared by the process of the present invention are also useful as flocculating agents for sewages, industrial wastes, mining streams such as coal slurries and mining effluents, as thickeners for coating formulations and as additives for the manufacture of paper.

    Water-in-oil emulsions of cationic water-soluble copolymers which are prepared by incorporating only a portion of the cationig monomer in the aqueous phase prior to forming the water-in-oil emulsion in which polymerization will occur, forming the emulsion, adding the balance of the cationic monomer, and then polymerizing the monomers. Copolymers prepared by this new process show improved performance over conventionally prepared cationic copolymers.

    Water-in-oil emulsions of monomers which form water-soluble polymers are polymerized in the presence of a biphase initiator system containing both an oil-soluble initiator and a water-soluble initiator or activator or alternatively a water-soluble initiator and an oil-soluble activator which results in polymers having improved performance characteristics. In addition, the system permits the satisfactory polymerization of monomers which could not have been reproducibly polymerized.
