    Diamino compounds, dinitro compounds, diol compounds and a process for preparing the diamino compounds which are useful as materials of poly-imide compounds for obtaining aligning films having high pretilt angles in liquid crystal display elements are provided. The diamino compounds are represented by the general formula: wherein R₁-R₆ are a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 22 carbon atoms, respectively, and R₇-R₁₂ are a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, F or Cl respectively.

    An improved liquid crystal-aligning coating composed mainly of a specified polymer, for example a polyether polyimide or a polyimide, and capable of controlling the alignment and pretilt angle of liquid crystals; a liquid crystal display element using the coating; and a dinitro compound and a diol compound each as an intermediate of a diamino compound constituting the polyimide ether, are provided. The polymer contains in its molecular chain, a substituted cyclohexylidene group or a cyclohexylidene group expressed by the formula wherein R₁ to R₆ of the cyclohexyl group each represent H, C₁ to C₁₅ alkyl group, a cyclohexyl group or a cyclohexyl group having a C₁ to C₁₅ alkyl group, and may be each the same or partly or totally different.

    A method for manufacturing a liquid crystal element having least pixel defect in a high yield comprising the step of providing an electrode and a semiconductor element on a pair of transparent substrates, followed by the steps of applying photoresist, exposing, etching, stripping the resist, inspecting the electrode and the semiconductor element, applying an insulation film, applying an alignment layer, rubbing the alignment layer, spraying a spacer, applying a sealant, assembling a cell, encapsulating a liquid crystal, pasting a polarizer, and connecting an IC, characterized in that the substrate is irradiated with soft X-rays in at least one step preceeding the step of rubbing the alignment layer.
