    A chain extending agent for reaction injection molding (RIM) comprising a normally liquid blend of butanediol and a toluene diamine mono-substituted with an electron withdrawing group and having the formula wherein X is vicinal to an amino radical and is selected from the group of halogen, CN, N02, acyl, carboxylate and isomeric mixtures thereof, and wherein the butanediol and diamine are combined in a critical mole ratio of from 4:1 to about 19:1. The above blend is particularly useful in the preparation of large moldings of polyurethane-polyurea elastomer by the RIM or RRIM (reinforced reaction injection molding) process wherein instant preformed blend is added to a mixture of polyol reactant and catalyst before polymerization in the mold with isocyanate to produce a urethane/ urea polymer product of improved properties. Accordingly, the invention also concerns an enhanced RIM or RRIM process and improved product by the use of a mixture of the present chain extender blend and polyol reactant maintain- able in the liquid state at ambient temperature.

    This invention relates to a class of tertiary-alkyltoluenediamines having alkyl groups ortho to an amine group. More particularly the aromatic diamines are represented by the formulas: wherein R1, R2 and R3 are C1-3 alkyl groups or R2 and R3 are combined to form a C5-6 membered ring. The above described alkylated aromatic diamines have been found to be well suited for use as a chain extender in forming polyurethane/urea elastomer systems and the mono tert-butyltoluenediamine isomers have been found to be non- mutagenic in the Ames test.

    This invention relates to a polyisocyanate prepolymer for polyurethane/urea elastomer synthesis and to the resulting elastomer. The prepolymer is formed by reacting toluenediisocyanate with a long chain polyol under conditions such that essentially a 2:1 adduct is formed. Excess toluenediisocyanate is removed prior to forming the elastomer.

    This invention relates to a solvent-free process for producing polyurethane/urea elastomers wherein an aromatic diisocyanate is reacted with a compound having active Zerewitinoff hydrogen atoms and an aromatic diamine chain extender. The improvement for producing urethanes having a wide range of properties comprises including a urethane-linked diisocyanate in the polyurethane urea elastomer. The urethane-linked diisocyanate is one that is formed by reacting toluenediisocyanate or substituent thereof with a short chain diol under conditions such that the urethane linked diisocyanate comprises two equivalents isocyanate per equivalent diol.

    This invention relates to urethane linked hydroxy aromatic amines and to a process for producing such urethane linked hydroxy aromatic amines. The compositions are formed by initially reacting one equivalent aromatic diisocyanate with one equivalent of an alkylene polyol under conditions such that only one of the isocyanate groups reacts with one hydroxyl group of the polyol. Conditions are controlled such that only the urethane linked hydroxy aromatic isocyanate is formed. Then, the resulting urethane linked hydroxy aromatic isocyanate is hydrolyzed to form the amine.
