    A method for carrying out a chemical reaction between at least two reactants occupying separate phases within a multiphase reaction mixture has been discovered in which at least one phosphazenium salt is employed as a phase transfer catalyst. The remarkable utility of phosphazenium salts as phase transfer catalysts is illustrated by the preparation of aromatic ethers. The phosphazenium salt phase transfer catalysts are shown to be especially useful in the preparation of aromatic polyethers such as polyether sulfones.

    A composition of matter comprising a polyester composition derived from: (i) 20 to 80 mole percent of a first diol derived from a disubstituted xylene glycol of the formula (I): wherein R 1 and R 2 are independently selected from the group consisting of aliphatic radical, aromatic radical, cycloaliphatic, radical and halogen; and (ii) a second diol and (iii) a diacid is disclosed. Also disclosed are blends of these polyesters with polycarbonate and process to prepare these compositions and articles therefrom.

    A transparent antimicrobial thermoplastic molding composition is disclosed. The composition contains aromatic polycarbonate resin and 0.01 to 3.8 of an antimicrobial compound conforming to formula (I) Ag a M 1 b M 2 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (I) wherein M 1 is at least one ion selected from the group consisting of alkali metal ion, alkaline earth metal ion, ammonium ion and hydrogen ion, M 2 a tetravalent metal selected from the group consisting of Ti, Zr and Sn, and where a and b are positive numbers where a+mb=1 where m is a valence of M 1 , the percent being relative to the weight of the polycarbonate. The composition is suitable for molding articles having good appearance and surface qualities.
