  hydroxide or methylate, ammonia and amines tetrachlorophenylglyoxylic acid (2a) or corresponding ester 2b and amides 4a–4k are formed. Instead of a normal chinoxaline derivative 6 is obtained from 1 and o-phenylenediamine. Similarly N,N-dimethyl- and phenylhydrazine give 7a, b, while under proton catalysis the phthalazones 9a, b were isolated from 1 with hydrazine and phenylhydrazine.
