The synthesis of five new 2-aryl-3-iodo-1-phenyl-tellurophenium iodides and polyiodides via electrophilic cyclization of homopropargyl tellurides using I-2 as an electrophile is described. The homopropargyl tellurides 1a and 1b react with different amounts of molecular iodine to give [C16H14TeI]I (2), [C16H14TeI]I-3 (3), {[C16H14ITe](4)[I-3(-)](3)[I-]center dot 2I(2)} (4), [C17H16OTeI]I (5), and [C17H16OTeI]I-3 (6). All of these compounds display inter and/or intramolecular secondary interactions between Te center dot center dot center dot I and/or I center dot center dot center dot I in the solid state, and these interactions are responsible for the formation of various supramolecular assemblies.
