  The invention relates to metabolically labile water-insoluble esters of formula wherein R¹ is a an aliphatic, araliphatic, aryl or heterocyclic group; R² is hydrogen or an aliphatic, aryl or araliphatic group; R³ is as defined for R¹, or R³ and R² together form an alkylene chain; the molecule containing at least one iodine atom and being metabolised to form products which are soluble in body fluids. The esters are used in X-ray and ultrasound image enhancement.

  (EN) Water insoluble iodinated esters of formula (I), in which R1 is a substituted or unsubstituted C1-20 aliphatic, C7-20 araliphatic or C6-20 aryl group or a C1-20 heterocyclic group having one or more hetero atoms selected from O, S and N; R2 is hydrogen or a substitued or unsubstituted C1-6 aliphatic, C6-10 aryl or C7-20 araliphatic group; and R3 is a group as defined above for R1, which may be the same as or different from R1, or R2 and R3 together represent a substituted or unsubstituted C1-4 alkylene group, the molecule containing at least one iodine atom and being metabolisable to products which are soluble in body fluids and are physiologically acceptable.
