  A novel method to induce 1,5-hydride transfer for the production of methyl substituted polyketide structural units was developed. A new avenue to the formation of a tertiary stereocenter was accomplished through the activation of benzyl protected homoallylic substrates with a variety of electrophilic activating conditions.
