Polyfluoroalkyl compounds:
(R-X-)₂-Q-Y
wherein
R represents CF₃(CF₂)n- (n: an integer of 7 to 13),
X represents a hydrocarbyl linking group containing 6 to 11 carbon atoms and optionally containing a double bond, triple bond or ether bond at any position,
Q represents a connector between the hydrophobic group of R-X- and the hydrophilic group of Y, and
Y represents a hydrophilic group.
The compounds may be produced by subjecting R-X-OH and L-glutamic acid to azeotropic dehydration reaction in the presence of a salt-forming agent of AH (wherein A represents, for example, a p-toluenesulfonate ion or a sulfate ion), subsequently an acylation reaction and a quaternizing reaction. The compounds may be used for forming a thin film by, for example, the Langmuir-Brodgett process. The film may be supported on a porous support to produce a membrane capable of separating substances.
