  The Wittig-reaction of 2-acylamino-2-deoxy-4,6-0-ethylidene glucose 1 leads either to the chiral glycerols 6, via a fragmentation of the sugar, or to the chain-elongated derivatives 8, depending on type of the ylide. Compounds 8 can be converted easily to the open-chain aldehydo sugar 10 in two steps.
