  The present invention provides golf balls (10, 20, 30) having a cover (16, 26, 38), a core (12, 22, 32), and optionally one or more intermediate layers (24, 34, 36) between the cover (10, 20, 30) and the core (16, 26, 38), wherein at least one of the cover (10, 20, 30), the core (16, 26, 38) and, if present, the intermediate layer(s) (24, 34, 36), is formed of an ion-containing polymer composition, particularly a zwitter-ion or ionene polymer. The zwitter-ion polymers contain both cationic and anionic species on the polymer backbone or as a pendant group on the polymer backbone. The ionene polymers contain only a cationic portion attached to the polymer backbone and are associated with another ion. These ion-containing polymer compositions can be used to provide improved characteristics to golf balls (10, 20, 30) made therefrom. The invention also relates to methods of making and using the compositions in the golf balls (10, 20, 30).
