    Synthesis of Nitrogen-Containing Macrocycles with Reductive Intramolecular Coupling of Aromatic Diimines

    Reductive intramolecular coupling of aromatic diimines is an effective method for the synthesis of a variety of nitrogen-containing macrocycles. 1,4-Diazacrown ethers 3 were effectively synthesized by intramolecular coupling of bis(imino ethers) 9 promoted by electroreduction (method A) or chemical reduction with zinc powder (method B) in the presence of methanesulfonic acid. In spite of the formation of macrocycles, the yields of 3 were relatively high. This can be explained by the formation of proton-bridged intermediates 14, in which intramolecular hydrogen bonds are formed between hydrogen and oxygen atoms of diiminium salts. Method B was more effective in the formation of 1,4-diaza-12-crown-4 derivatives 3 (n = 1) due to the template effect of Zn2+. Optically active macrocyclic bislactones 4 were synthesized stereoselectively by reductive intramolecular coupling of bis(imino esters) 20 with zinc powder (method B). The high stereoselectivity is explained by considering proton-bridged intermediate 23. The resultant compounds 4 were transformed to optically active 1,2-diarylethylenediamines 7. Various sizes of macrocyclic bislactams 5 were synthesized by reductive intramolecular coupling of bis(imino amides) 26 with zinc powder (method B). Reduction of 5 gave the corresponding macrocyclic polyamines 6.

    Hydrocarbonaceous fuels and additive compositions therefor which comprise: a) one or more fuel-soluble manganese carbonyl compounds; b) one or more fuel-soluble alkali or alkaline earth metal-containing neutral or basic detergent salts; and c) one or more fuel-soluble ashless dispersants. These compositions preferably contain, in addition to components a), b) and c) above, one or more of the following: d) at least one fuel-soluble demulsifying agent; e) at least one aliphatic or cycloaliphatic amine; and f) at least one metal deactivator. The compositions possess improved combustion characteristics (e.g., formation of less soot, smoke, carbonaceous products and/or noxious emissions), and form on combustion carbonaceous products of reduced acidity. The deposition of sludge on critical engine or burner parts or surfaces is reduced and the fuels have improved stability and demulsibility characteristics. And the fuel compositions can result in decreased fuel consumption in diesel engines.

    Compositions and methods for achieving almost immediate reductions in emissions produced during the operations of engines or burners on middle distillate hydrocarbonaceous fuels. This is effected by including in the fuel a sufficiently high concentration of at least one fuel-soluble ashless dispersant. The amount used is equivalent to at least 50 ppm, preferably 75 to 1,000 ppm, and most preferably 100 to 250 ppm of ashless dispersant (active ingredient). It is preferred to include in the fuel at least one fuel-soluble hindered phenolic antioxidant, such as 2,6-di-tert-butyl-a-dimethylamino-p-cresol.

    Compositions comprising a combination of (i) at least one hydrocarbon-soluble aryl phosphate of the formula wherein each R is, independently, phenyl or an alkyl-substituted phenyl group; and (ii) at least one hydrocarbon-soluble aryl polyphosphate of the formula wherein each R is, independently, phenyl or an alkyl-substituted phenyl group, Ar is m-phenylene or an alkyl-substituted m-phenylene group, and n is from 1 to 4, and a process for the preparation of such compositions. The combination contains from 2 to 30% by weight of component (i).

    Hydrocarbonaceous distillate fuel compositions and additive concentrates are described that provide improved performance in evaporative burners. The additive components comprise a mixture formed from at least (a) a cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl compound; (b) a succinic derivative ashless dispersant; (c) an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid having at least 24 carbon atoms in the molecule, the two carboxyl groups being separated from each other by at least 6 carbon atoms; and (d) a metal deactivator of the chelation type. Preferably, the compositions also contain (e) alkoxylated alkylphenol; (f) a demulsifying agent; (g) a tertiary monoamine in which each substituent on the nitrogen atom is a hydrocarbyl group; and (h) liquid inert solvent having a final boiling point no higher than approximately 300°C. The compositions are devoid of any metal-containing additive component other than the cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl compound.

    Effective foam control and enhanced additive compatibility is achieved in additive concentrates and liquid fuels containing overbased alkaline earth metal detergents. This is accomplished by utilizing as the antifoam agent a water-soluble polyether-polysiloxane copolymer having a siloxane backbone with organic polyalkylene oxide pendant groups attached to the siloxane backbone via direct silicon-to-carbon bonds. A number of other types of foam inhibitors have been found incapable of achieving these results.
