2-phenylpyridine over a wide range of aryl halides was achieved over arene-ruthenium(II) catalyst using 2-hydroxypyridine based ligand as promoters in water-ethanol. NMR, mass and DFT studies evidenced the crucial role of pyridone ligands in enhancing the C−H bond arylation of 2-phenylpyridine facilitated by the Ru(II) coordinated ligand assisted concerted metalation deprotonation process.

Mechanistic studies revealed ruthenium-catalyzed direct arylations to proceed through reversible C-H bond activation and subsequent rate-limiting oxidative addition with aryl halides, which led to the development of widely applicable well-defined ruthenium(II) carboxylate catalysts.
