The 4-halo-2,6-diisopropyl-N-formyl anilides HC(O)NH-C6H2-i-Pr-2-2,6-X-4, (2a) (X = Br) and 2b (X = I), serve as precursors for the bromo-, iodo -, alkynyl- and cyano- substituted diisopropylphenylisocyanides CN-C6H2-i-Pr-2-2,6-X-4, (3a) (X = Br) and 3b (X = I), CN-C6H2-i-Pr-2-2,6-R-4, (6) (R = C=CSiMe3), (7) (R = C=CH), (9) (R = C=C-C6H4-C=CSiMe3-4), 10 (R = C=C-C6H4-C=CH-4) and 12 (R = CN). The new isocyanides readily form complexes with several metal iodides: CoI2L4, 13 (L = 7), MI2L2, 14-23 (M = Pd and Pt, L = 3a, 3b, 7, 10, 12, and AuIL, 24 and 25 (L = 10 and 12). The crystal structures of the complexes 13, 15 (M = Pt, L = 3a), and 22 (M = Pd, L = 12) have been determined by X-rap crystallography. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
