Ligating topology and counter anion controlled formation of discrete metallo-macrocycle and 2D corrugated sheet in coordination compounds derived from a bis-pyridyl-bis-amide ligand and Cd (II)salts

Two coordination compounds namely [{(H2O)(2)(NO3)(4)(MeOH)(2)Cd-2(mu-L1)(2)}] 1 and [{(H2O)(2)Cd(mu-SO4)(mu-L1)}](n) 2 have been isolated by reacting a bis-pyridyl-bis-amide ligand namely N,N'-bis-(3-pyridyl)isophthalamide L1 with Cd(NO3)(2) and CdSO4, respectively. Single crystals of both 1 and 2 were determined. It was revealed from the X-ray analyses that conformation dependent ligating topology of L1 and different coordination modes of the counter anions (nitrate and sulfate) are responsible for the formation of discrete metallo-macrocycle (compound 1) and 2D corrugated sheet (compound 2).
