    Production of an arylophenone by reacting an aromatic carboxylic acid of formula Ar(-CO2H)n, where n is preferably 1 or 2, with an aromatic compound of formula Ar'-H to produce an arylophenone of formula Ar(-CO-Ar')n, wherein the process is carried out in the presence of a fluoroalkane sulphonic acid, preferably trifluoromethane sulphonic acid. For example, 4,4'-dihydroxy-benzophenone is prepared from 4-hydroxy- benzoic acid and phenol.

    Polyaryletherketones are prepared by polymerisation of a halogen-containing aryl ketone in the presence of a stoichiometric excess of a base and a copper salt. The halogen-containing aryl ketone may be 4-chloro-4'-hydroxybenzophenone. A basic copper salt may be used but the base used to provide the excess of base is an alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate.

    Aromatic polyethers are produced by polycondensing monomers containing phenolic groups and aromatic halogen, at least some of the aromatic halogen - containing monomers being free of activating groups such as -CO- or -SO2-, in the presence of a copper-containing catalyst and of a basic alkali metal compound present in stoichiometric excess relative to phenolic groups and copper. The products include new polyethers, particularly containing the repeating unit Ph1-PH1-O alone or with ketone containing or sulphone-containing units, where Ph' is phenylene.

    A polymer contains repeating units and (Where Ph is para-phenylene) linked together by ether linkages, and has a relatively higher molecular weight corresponding to an inherent viscosity of at least 0.4. Preferred polymers contain 65-85 mole % of units I relative to the total of and II and are characterised by inter alia high solvent resistance, glass transition temperature over 200°C and melting temperature below 400°C. Processes for making the polymers and composite containing them are also provided.

    An improved process for producing aromatic polyethers by condensation polymerizing aromatic dihydroxy compounds represented by the general formula: HO-Ar-OH and aromatic dichloro compounds represented by the general formula: Cl-Ar¹-Y-Ar²-Cl, or condensation polymerizing monohydroxymonochloro aromatic compounds represented by the general formula: HO-Ar¹-Y-Ar²-Cl in the above formulae, Ar, Ar¹, Ar² are as defined in the specification) in the presence of alkali metal compounds comprising a combination of alkali metal carbonates comprising carbonate and/or hydrogencarbonate of an alkali metal, e.g., potassium, and alkali metal fluorides. In accordance with the present process, high molecular weight aromatic polyethers can be efficiently produced from aromatic chloro compounds which are inexpensive and easily available.
