    A photographic element containing a temporary barrier layer between reactants and polymeric compositions useful therein are disclosed. The compositions comprise a mixture of (1) from 5 to 95 percent by weight of a polymer comprising from 55 to 85 percent by weight of vinylidene chloride, 5 to 35 percent by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and optionally from 0 to 20 percent by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, and (2) from 95 to 5 percent by weight of a polymeric carboxy-ester-lactone. A barrier formed from such composition is particularly useful as a process timing layer in color image transfer photographic elements.

    An emulsion of a polymer comprising (a) a recurring unit derived from a (meth)acrylate and (b) a recurring unit derived from a vinyl compound containing a -SO₃R group in which R is hydrogen, an alkali metal or an ammonium ion. The emulsion forms a protective film on adherends such as hydroxyapatite, cements, metals and minerals when it is applied thereto and dried at about room temperature without washing with water. The emulsion also has an affinity for acrylic resin compositions.
