Five novel disymmetrical. ligands containing two or more 2,2'-bipyridine moieties covalently linked, belonging to 4, 5 or 8 coordination sites, have been synthesized with high yield, starting from previously prepared 4-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine. Their abilities to complex ruthenium(II) have been investigated as well as the determination of the main physico-chemical features of the resulting multinuclear complexes. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Highly efficient visible-light-driven CO<sub>2</sub> reduction to CO using a Ru(<scp>ii</scp>)–Re(<scp>i</scp>) supramolecular photocatalyst in an aqueous solution
Even in an aqueous solution, a Ru(ii)–Re(i) supramolecular photocatalyst worked well for CO2 reduction. A water-soluble reductant BI(CO2−)H should be useful for evaluation of the real abilities of various photocatalytic systems.
