Metal-free and copper(II) 1,4,8,11,15,18,22,25-octa-alkylphthalocyanines have been prepared with alkyl chain lengths between C4 and C10; all except those with C4 and C5 chains show thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviour with one or more mesophases.
