Inhibition of the enzymes cholesterol ester hydrolase (CEH) and/or acyl coenzyme A: cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) results in the inhibition of the esterification of cholesterol and are therefore implicated in the inhibition of absorption of cholesterol and thus can lower serum cholesterol levels.
