  A novel cross dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reaction of N,N-dimethylanilines with methyl ketones by cooperative copper and aminocatalysis has been developed, which leads to the formation of beta-arylamino ketones in 42-73% yields. Moreover, the copper-catalyzed alkylation of free (NH) indoles with N,N-dimethylanilines via CDC reaction is also presented, affording alkylated indoles in 52-78% yields.

  This invention relates to novel antihypertensive 5-(2-anilinoalkyl-amino-1-hydroxyalkyl)-salicylamides of the formula wherein R' and R3 are independently hydrogen atoms or lower alkyl groups; R2 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl, loweralkoxyloweralkyl or hydroxyloweralkyl group; Alk is an acyclic alkylene bridge containing 2-10 carbon atoms, with the proviso that there are 2-6 carbon atoms separating the nitrogen atoms that it bridges; Z is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl, lower alkanoyl, lower alkylsulfonyl, arylsulfonyl, loweralkoxyloweralkyl, 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl or benzyl group; and Y1 and Y2 are independently hydrogen or halogen atoms or hydroxy, trifluoromethyl, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy. nitro, unsubstituted amino, monoloweralkylamino, di-loweralkylamino, loweralkanoylamino, loweralkylsulfonylamino, arylsulfonylamino, N-loweralkyl-N-loweralkanoylamino or N-loweralkyl-N-loweralkylsulfonylamino groups; and the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof; to their preparation and to pharmaceutical compositions containing them.
