Novel liquid crystalline compounds and liquid crystal compositions comprising the compound are provided which liquid crystalline compounds have a high dielectric anisotropy, high voltage holding ratio at temperatures in which the compounds are employed, low threshold voltage, and improved solubility with other liquid crystal materials at low temperatures; and the liquid crystalline compounds are cyclohexane derivatives expressed by the following general formula (1)
wherein R1 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 15 carbon atoms, at least one non-adjacent methylene group (-CH2-) in the alkyl group may be replaced by -O-, -S-, -CH=CH-, or -C≡C-; L1, L2, L3, and L4 independently represent H or F; X represent a halogen atom, CF3, OCF3, OCHF2, CN, or NCS; and Z1 and Z2 independently represent -(CH2)2-, -CH=CH-, -COO-, or a covalent bond.
