    The present invention aims to provide a method for producing a (2S,5R)-5-(protected oxyamino)-piperidine-2-carboxylic acid derivative at a low cost that can be performed under mild reaction conditions not requiring a facility at an extremely low temperature, is safer, can control the quality of the desired product with ease, and shows good workability in the site of production. A method for producing a compound represented by the formula (2): wherein PG 1 is an amino-protecting group, PG 2 is an amino-protecting group, PG 3 is a hydroxyl-protecting group, LG is a leaving group, and R is a hydrocarbon group having 1-8 carbon atoms and optionally having substituent(s), including a step of reacting a compound represented by the formula (1): wherein each symbol is as defined above, with a hydroxylamine derivative represented by the formula PG 2 NHOPG 3 wherein each symbol is as defined above, in the presence of a base in a solvent.

    An ophthalmic lens and a method for providing a thin coating thereon is disclosed. The coatings render the surfaces of the devices resistant to abrasion and have an SEB abrasion resistance of at least 20 psi. They are optically clear, aberration-free, and provide essentially exactly an optical surface having the desired surface configuration. The coating compositions employed contain reactive ethylenically unsaturated groups and are applied to a mold face and partially reacted. The coated mold is then used to cast the ophthalmic device.

    Inherently highly abrasion-resistant cast articles are prepared by polymerizing a composition comprising (I) as a first component from 0 to 100 parts of urethane polyacrylic ester and (II) as a second component, correspondingly from 100 to 0 parts of a composition containing (A) 45 to 60% by weight of a polyacrylic ester having 4 to 10 acryloyloxy groups, (B) 20 to 55% by weight of a polymerization shrinkage modifier, and (C) 0 to 30% of a diluent monomer. A source of free-radicals may be added to the composition.

    A radiation curable and abrasion resistant coating composition is provided comprising: (a) 70% to 98% by weight of an urethane-acrylate oligomer; (b) 2% to 30% of fine particles of a filler capable of imparting abrasion resistance having an average particle size in the range of 1-20 microns; (c) optionally a reactive diluent; and (d) optionally an synthetic resin. The coatings when applied to wood floorings impart superior abrasion resistance.
