    the plasma membrane transport in mammalian cells. The remarkably higher uptake of iodinated compounds compared to that of their chloro or bromo analogues suggests that the strong halogen bonding ability of iodine atoms may play an important role in the membrane transport. This study provides a novel strategy for the transport of fluorescent molecules across the plasma membrane in living cells.

  • Synthesis of Some Anilides of 2-Alkyl-4-pyridinecarboxylic Acids and Their Photosynthesis-Inhibiting Activity

    Homolytic alkylation of 4-pyridinecarbonitrile with radicals generated by silver nitrate catalyzed oxidative decarboxylation of alkanoic acids and subsequent alkaline hydrolysis afforded 2-alkyl-4-pyridinecarboxylic acids 2a-2e. These were converted into the halogeno-hydroxy substituted anilides 3a-3r via acyl chlorides by reaction with the respective aminophenols at 10 °C. Of the compounds tested, 5-chloro-2-hydroxyphenylamide of 2-butyl-4-pyridinecarboxylic acid 3h showed the highest effect upon oxygen evolution rate in spinach chloroplasts system. The structure-photosynthesis-inhibiting activity relationships are briefly discussed.

    Disclosed is a method for determination of an activity of γ-glutamyl transpeptidase, leucine aminopeptidase, alanine aminopeptidase, cystine aminopeptidase, X factor as a coagulation factor, thrombin, plasmin of plasminogen series, kallikrein, chymotrypsin, alkali phosphatase, N-acetyl glucosaminase and amylase, by allowing a particular substrate to act on the enzyme to thereby form an enhancer; oxidizing a chromogen by an oxidase in the presence of the enhancer and oxygen to form a pigment; and determining the pigment. Also disclosed is a test composition for carrying out the determination.

    A composition for testing periodontal diseases which diagnoses or prognosticates contraction or progress of the diseases or diagnoses the therapeutic value by promptly determining peptidase-like enzymatic activity in a specimen. The composition is a combination of a compound of the formula [1] or [2] or a mixture thereof, a chromogen and an oxidase: X-T-Pro-Y [1] or X′-Z′-Arg-Y′      [2] wherein Pro is proline residue; Arg is arginine residue; X and X′ are hydrogen or an amino protecting group, respectively; Y and Y′ are a residue of a compound which can increase oxidation reaction rate of the chromogen with an oxidase in the presence of oxygen and is attached to the C-­terminal of Pro or Arg, respectively; and T and Z′ are an amino acid or peptide residue composed of 0 to 4 amino acids or their protected derivatives, the C-terminal of which is attached to the N-terminal of Pro or Arg, respectively.

    Disclosed are a method for quantitative determination of bilirubin and a reagent for the method, which are useful in clinical examinations. The method comprises subjecting the bilirubin in a sample to coexist with ascorbate oxidase and a reaction promoter in aqueous medium to thereby oxidize the bilirubin, measuring the change in absorbance of the aqueous medium and comparing the change in absorbance with a calibration curve. The reagent comprises ascorbate oxidase and a reaction promoter.
