  Linear tetrapyrroles, such as the formylbilane (1), were obtained by condensation of alpha-hydroxymethyldipyrromethanes with alpha-free dipyrromethanes using Montmorillonite clay as acid catalyst. After reduction of the formyl group, hydroxymethylbilanes were cyclized to Uroporphyrinogens in presence of the clay.
