  The condensation product of 2-carbethoxycyclopentanone and ethyl cyanoacetate is ethyl 2-carbethoxycyclopentylidene cyanoacetate (IIa) and not the one described by Kon and Nanji. Similarly, 2-carbomethoxycyclopentanone and methyl cyanoacetate yield methyl 2-carbomethoxycyclopentylidene cyanoacetate (IIb). The by-products obtained in the first reaction are cyclopentylidene cyanoacetate (IV) and the
