Trichlorstyrene is prepared by contacting at elevated temperature chlorethyltrichlorbenzene with activated alumina or "Floridin" (a Registered Trade Mark). The effective removal of chlorine from the side chain makes the product very suitable for polymerization. It may be copolymerized with styrene, nuclear alkylated styrene, a -alkyl styrenes, e.g. methylstyrene, halogenated styrenes, vinyl compounds, such as vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinyl naphthalene, halogenated vinyl naphthalene, allyl compounds such as methacrylic and maleic acid allyl esters or dienes such as chloroprene, butadienes and methyl and phenylbutadienes. The copolymerization may be effected in the form of an emulsion. Specification 539,667 is referred to.
