AbstractAromatic aldoximes were converted to the corresponding nitriles in good to excellent yields by employing phosphoric acid diethyl ester 2-phenylbenzimidazol-1-yl ester as reagent. The method was equally effective for oximes bearing electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents. Graphical Abstract
It was found that N-trifluoroacetylimidazole was an excellent reagent for the intramolecular dehydration of aldoximes to give nitriles uner mold conditions.
N,N-Dimethylformamide was found to act as solvent and catalyst in the dehydration of aldoximes to nitriles. The reaction -required heating at 135 °C and yields of nitriles were moderate to good. (Benzylideneaminooxy)formaldehyde was detected as an -intermediate in one of the reactions.
