A highly efficient iridium-catalyzedhydrogenation of alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acids has been developed by using chiral spiro-phosphino-oxazoline ligands, affording alpha-substituted chiral carboxylic acids in exceptionally high enantioselectivities and reactivities.

The silver-catalyzed decarboxylativetrifluoromethylation of aliphatic carboxylicacids is described. With AgNO3 as the catalyst and K2S2O8 as the oxidant, the reactions of aliphatic carboxylicacids with (bpy)Cu(CF3)3 (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) and ZnMe2 in aqueous acetonitrile at 40 °C afford the corresponding decarboxylativetrifluoromethylation products in good yield. α-ketoglutarate-dependent aryloxyalkanoate dioxygenases (AADs) are repurposed for applications in biocatalytic oxyfunctionalization. Activity profiling of natural AADs enabled the synthesis of four types of α-and β-hydroxy acids with broad scope, high efficiency, and good selectivity.

In this Communication, procedures for the selective synthesis of 4-arylbutanoic acids, 2-arylbutanoic acids, and 4-arylbutanals from the same allylbenzenes have been developed. With formic acid or TFBen as the CO surrogate, reactions proceed selectively and effectively under carbon monoxide gas-free conditions.
