    Herbicidal N - (heterocyclicaminocarbonyl)- sulfonamides, and preparation and use thereof, having the general formula wherein R is an aromatic organic group, W is oxygen or sulphur and X and Y are hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, methyl, methoxy or ethoxy. The compounds may be made by reacting 4-aminopyrimidine with an isocyanate or isothiocyanate. They can be formulated for agricultural use with a surface active agent and/or a solid or liquid diluent, and can be used pre- or post-emergence for controlling weeds or for regulating plant growth.

    N-(Heterocyclicaminocarbonyl) arylsulfamates of the general formula wherein R1 is H, OCH3 or alkyl of 1-3 carbons; X and Y are CH3, CH3CH2, various alkoxy groups, CH3S, CH3CH2S, or X may be CF3 or Cl; Z is CH or N; R2-R6 are H or various substituents; and agriculturally suitable salts thereof, are of interest for plant growth retardation, brush control and weed control in crops. They may be made by reacting an appropriate arylox- aryloxysulfonyl isocyanate with an appropriate 2-aminopyrimidine or 2-amino-1,3,5-triazine. For use, an effective amount of the compound is applied to the locus of the undesired vegetation to be controlled.

    Pyridinesulfonamides of a general formula and their agriculturally suitable salts wherein: R1 and R2 are H or various substituents; R3 and R. are independently H or CH3; W is O or S: and R is a pyrimidyl or triazinyl residue which may be substituted; are of interest as herbicides for preemergence or post- emergence application and for regulating plant growth. The compounds can be made e.g. by reacting an appropriate pyridylsulfonyl isocyanate or isothiocyanate with an appropriate amino- or methylamino-substituted pyrimidine or triazine. The compounds can be formulated for use in conventional manner.

    Compounds of the formula: wherein R is C,-C4 alkyl, N02, Cl, Br, SO2NR1R2 where R, and R2 are selected from C1-C3 alkyl; X is H, Cl, Br, CH3, CH3CH2, alkoxy C,-C3, CF3, CH3S or CH30CH2; Y is CH3 or CH30; and Z is CH or N; and agriculturally suitable salts thereof, exhibit herbicidal activity especially against broadleaf weeds; they are selective in certain crops, e.g. wheat and barley. The compounds can be formulated for use in conventional manner. They may be made by reacting an appropriately substituted 2-aminotriazine or 2-aminopyrimidine with a substituted thiophenenesulfonyl isocyanate.

    Compounds of the formulae and wherein: A is selected from certain substituted amino, haloalkoxy or aryloxy groups; R1 is hydrogen, halogen, nitro or various organic groups; R'1 is H, Cl, F, Br, CH3 or OCH3; R, and R5 are independently H or CH3 but not both CH,; R6 is a pyrimidyl or triazinyl residue which may be substituted; W is oxygen or sulfur; Z is CH or N; X, and Y, are H, CH3 or various alkoxy groups, but cannot both be H; and B is selected from various aliphatic or aromatic organic groups; and their agriculturally suitable salts, exhibit potent herbicidal activity. Some may also exhibit plant growth regulant activity. The compounds (I) and (IA) can be formulated for use in conventional manner. The compounds (I) can be made inter alia by reacting an isocyanate or isothiocyanate of general formula with an amine HNR Rm. The compounds (I) can be converted into compounds (IA) by reacting an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt thereof with an appropriate halide BI or BBr. The novel intermediates (IB) also form part of the invention. They can be made from the corresponding sulfonamide by various phosgenation reactions.
