Thirteen new macrocyclic diamides and tetramides have been synthesized by reaction of methyl phenoxyacetates (readily obtained from various phenols) with α,ω-diamines in methanol as a solvent. Relationship between structure of esters and ratio of diamides to tetraamides has been investigated.

The molecular structures of the title compounds 3 and 5 were investigated by NMR and X-raystructural methods. The NMR results suggest two equivalent halves for both molecules. The X-raystudy shows an approximate mirror plane for 3 and an approximate twofold axis for a significant portion of the macrocycle of 5.
