Synthesis and correlation of electronic structures and NMR properties of 10c-azoniafluoranthene and 12d-azoniaperylene

The synthesis of 10b-azoniafluoranthene (1a) and 12d-azoniaperylene (2) is described. MNDO calculations and H-1, C-13, and N-15 NMR data demonstrate that the positive charge in the two cations is delocalized off the nitrogen on the peripheral framework. Also, the fluoranthene derivative 1a supports an additional ring current not observed in 2. The two cations are reversibly reduced to the neutral radicals, whose EPR spectra in solution are reported and analyzed.
