    A method of screening for amyloid-binding compounds, amyloid-binding compounds, and a method of detecting amyloid-β (Abeta) plaques in a subject are disclosed. The method of screening for amyloid-binding compounds includes combining amyloid, a dye, and at least one test compound to form a sample solution; equilibrating the sample solution; measuring a fluorescence signal of the sample solution; and comparing the measured fluorescence signal of the sample to a control; wherein attenuation of the fluorescence signal, as compared to the control, indicates that one or more of the test compounds bind amyloid. The amyloid-binding compound includes a compound detected by the screening method. The method of detecting amyloid-β (Abeta) plaques in a subject includes administering one or more of the amyloid-binding compounds to the subject, and detecting the compound within the subject.

    The invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition comprising at least one quinone and to its use in the treatment of disease, especially cancer and virus infections. The composition of the invention comprises at least one quinone dissolved or dispersed in a liquid diluent or carrier at a concentration of about 103 moles/litre or below, preferably down to 1018 moles/litre. In the composition the at least one quinone is preferably: An anthraquinone glycoside, more preferably carminic acid.     A polymer scale deposition preventive agent comprising (a) an aromatic compound having at least eight conjugated π bonds and having a molecular weight of 1,000 or more, and (b) a polyalkylene oxide having a weight-average molecular weight of 2,000 or more, wherein the weight ratio of the component (a) to the component (b) is 100/500 to 100/1, can prevent surely the deposition of polymer scale even in a polymerization system containing a monomer, such as styrene, acrylic acid esters or acrylonitrile, which has a high solvency for a coating film consisting of the conventional polymer scale deposition preventive agent.

    An improved process for producing a polymer by polymerizing a monomer having an ethylenic double bond in a polymerization vessel having a polymer scale preventive coating film on its inner wall surfaces, etc. is provided. The coating film is formed by coating a first coating liquid containing a compound selected from the group consisting of an aromatic compound having 5 or more conjugated π bonds and a heterocyclic compound having 5 or more conjugated π bonds, and then coating a second coating liquid on the first layer. The first and second coating liquids are applied by means of steam as a carrier. The second layer has a surface having a contact angle to water of less than 60° after its surface has been brought into contact with a solution of mixture of water and a vinyl chloride monomer in a weight ratio of 1:1, at 50°C for 1 hour. This process can shorten the time for forming the coating film to improve productivity, can improve the effect of preventing adhesion of polymer scale, can make colored particles less mix into polymer products obtained by this process, can lessen fish eyes and initial discoloring of formed products and can improve the quality of polymeric products and their formed or molded products.

    A rust preventive composition including (a) a silicic acid compound and (b) an aromatic amine-based condensation product is provided, which is effective in preventing a Zn-based metallic coating from rusting. Rusting is prevented by forming a coating film containing the components (a) and (b) on the surfaces of the Zn-based metallic coating formed on a base such as a metal plate. The resulting coating film exhibits an excellent corrosion resistance, gives no fear of a health problem such as carcinogenesis and provides a desirable black or blackish appearance to a metal surface. In an embodiment wherein a second coating film containing a silicic acid compound is formed on the first coating film, the corrosion resistance is further improved.
