    2,2-bis(4-aminophenyl)hexafluoropropane is allowed to react with potassium thiocyanate and bromine to obtain 2,2-bis (5-amino-4,6-benzothiazolyl)hexafluoropropane, which is allowed to further react successively with potassium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid to obtain 2,2-bis(4-amino-3-mercaptophenyl)hexafluoropropane, which is a novel compound applicable as a curing agent for a fluorine-containing elastomer having CN groups as cross-linkable groups.

    An object of the present invention is to obtain a novel polymeric material capable of forming a solid polymer electrolyte excellent not only in processability, solvent resistance and durability/stability but also in ion conductivity by introducing sulfonic acid group or phosphonic acid group into a polybenzazole compound having excellent properties in view of heat resistance, solvent resistance, mechanical characteristics and the like. Means attaining the object of the present invention is a polybenzazole compound including an aromatic dicarboxylic acid bond unit having sulfonic acid group and/or phosphonic acid group and satisfying either a condition that inherent viscosity measured in concentrated sulfuric acid is in the range of 0.25 to 10 dl/g or a condition that inherent viscosity measured in a methanesulfonic acid solution is in the range of 0.1 to 50 dl/g. The object of the present invention can be attained also by a resin composition containing the aforementioned polybenzazole compound, a resin molding, a solid polymer electrolyte membrane, a solid polymer electrolyte membrane/electrode assembly and a method of preparing the solid polymer electrolyte membrane/electrode assembly.

    The invention concerns a polybenzazole block copolymer suitable for solid polymer electrolyte membranes application comprising : at least one block (B1) comprising recurring units (R), more than 50 % of said recurring units comprising at least one benzimidazole group (formula 1a and 1b) and at least one sulfonic acid group (formula 2) [recurring units (R1)]; wherein E in formula 1a can be a substituted or non-substituted carbon atom or nitrogen atom, and Q in formula 1 can be a hydrogen atom or a group comprising a sulfonic acid group; and at least one block (B2) comprising recurring units (R'), more than 50 % by moles of said recurring units comprising at least one benzazole group chosen among benzothiazole group (formula 3 a and 3b) and benzoxazole group (formula 4a and 4b) [recurring units (R2)], wherein E' and E" in formula 3a and 4a, respectively, can be a substituted or non-substituted carbon atom or nitrogen atom, and the block (B2) is free from sulfonic acid groups. The invention also relates to a polybenzazole polymer composition thereof, a solid polymer electrolyte membrane therefrom, a solid polymer electrolyte doped membrane therefrom, and the fuel cell therefrom.

    A proton exchange membrane is obtained which can give an excellent power generation characteristic when the membrane is applied to, in particular, a fuel cell wherein high-concentration methanol is used as a fuel. In the aromatic hydrocarbon based proton exchange membrane of the invention, the ion exchange capacity is set into the range of 0.6 to 1.3 meq/g. Moreover, the area swelling rate for a 30% by mass methanol aqueous solution at 40°C is set into the range of 2 to 30%. Preferably, a sulfonic acid group is bonded to an aromatic ring of the aromatic hydrocarbon based polymer contained in the aromatic hydrocarbon based proton exchange film. Preferably, the aromatic hydrocarbon based polymer is a polyarylene ether based polymer.

    The present invention relates to an optical resin comprising a poly(benzoazole) having repeating units represented by the following general formula (1) as a constituent; and an optical waveguide, an optical filter and an optical lens prepared using the optical resin: 1 wherein R 1 represents a tetravalent organic group having an aromatic ring, N and X in each of the two sets thereof are linked to two atoms at the ortho-position on the aromatic ring of R 1 to form a 5-membered ring, R 2 represents a divalent organic group and X represents an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom. The optical resin of the present invention has high transparency to light rays falling within the near infrared region, shows only small changes in the refractive index and the rate of birefringence as a function of wavelengths of light rays used for the measurement and falling within the near infrared region, has a low rate of birefringence and has high heat-resistance. Therefore, the optical resin of the present invention is suitably used as a resin for preparing optical parts, which are employed for the light rays falling within the wavelength range used in the optical communication.
