4-Arylbenzoyl benzoic acid esters, such as the ethylhexyl esters and amyl esters of 4-phenylbenzoyl benzoic acid, are described, which are liquid and show excellent solubility in acrylic or methacrylic monomers. Compounds of Formula (1), wherein R1, R2, and A are as defined herein, are disclosed. They are suitable as components for radical photoinitiator systems for UV-curable compositions.

A process for preparing pregnane derivatives represented by the formula (V),

which comprises the steps of:
reacting an alkali (earth) metal with a compound represented by the formula (I)

in the presence of ammonia or an amine, to obtain a compound represented by the formula (II);

protecting the hydroxy groups of the obtained compound, to obtain a compound represented by the formula (III);
4
protecting the 3-position carbonyl group of the obtained compound, to obtain a compound represented by the formula (IV);
5
and subjecting the obtained compound to solvolysis; and the compound (II).
A polypropylene-based resin composition containing 0.001 to 10.0 parts by weight of benzoic acid with or without substituent(s) on its benzene ring and/or an acid anhydride of benzoic acid, with or without substituents on its benzene rings, to 100 parts by weight of a polypropylene-based resin is disclosed. The resin can generate mouldings with improved rigidity or transparency.
