  Macrocyclisation of halogenated phosphine dioxides with bis (diphenylphosphino)-1,3 propane yields new bifunctionnal macrocycles 4, 5 with 4 phosphorus atoms in the ring. Application of a new methodology, via a bridge protection leads after an alkaline hydrolysis to homologous phosphine tetra oxides in good yields. Macrocyclic phosphine polyoxides with a two carbon bridging unit between the phosphorus atoms, a system difficult to prepare by other methods, can be obtained satisfactorily.
