Treating the pyrazolothiazepines with sodium hydride and methyl iodide in dimethylformamide or dimethylsulfoxide resulted in a ring contraction with the elimination of sulfur, to yield the pyrazolopyridones in addition to the N-methylpyrazolothiazepines.
