    A process for producing polyphenylene oxide which comprises contacting a phenolic monomer with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst composed of a manganese (II) salt and an ortho-hydroxyazo compound represented by the following formula: where A and B represent identical or different arylene ring having a valency of at least 2 and having an oxy group and an azo group directly linked to the ortho carbon atoms of the arylene ring and R represents hydrogen or lower alkyl group, or in the presence of said catalyst and an amine, in a polymerization solvent containing a base and thereby subjecting said phenolic monomer to an oxidative polymerization.

    A process for producing a polyphenylene ether comprises oxidatively polymerizing a phenol in an organic solvent in the presence of an oxidative polymerization catalyst, finely dispersing the resulting polyphenylene ether contained in the organic solvent in an aqueous dispersion medium containing an acid compound, and heating the aqueous dispersion to remove the solvent from the polyphenylene ether. The resulting polyphenylene ether has excellent powder properties and contains a reduced amount of catalyst residue.

    The invention provides a process for producing a polyphenylene ether by subjecting a 2,6-disubstituted phenol to oxidative coupling by introducing oxygen in the presence of a catalyst system which comprises a manganese compound, a chelant, a base, and an alpha,beta-unsaturated ketone, a beta-diketone, or a vinyl ether. The polyphenylene oxide produced has substantially no amine odor and more stable molecular weight, and is suitable for blending with styrenic or other resins to make thermoplastic resin blends of low odor and good physical properties.

    A process for producing a polyphenylene ether by oxidative polymerization of a phenol compound using a catalyst and an oxygen-containing gas, wherein the catalyst comprises a copper compound, a bromine compound, a diamine compound represented by the following formula (1) : (wherein, R1, R2, R3 and R4 each independently represents hydrogen or a C1-6 linear or branched alkyl group with the proviso that all of them do not represent hydrogen simultaneously, and R5 represents a linear or methyl-branched C2-5 alkylene group), a tertiary monoamine compound and a secondary monoamine compound, wherein the process comprises the steps of: controlling the absolute pressure at a gaseous phase of a reaction vessel to a range of from 0.098 MPa to less than 0.392 MPa; and feeding the oxygen-containing gas to the reaction vessel, the oxygen-containing gas having an oxygen partial pressure, in terms of an absolute pressure, of from 0.0147 MPa to 0.0883 MPa.

    Disclosed are: a high-performance polyphenylene ether-organoclay complex which is significantly improved in fire retardancy, durability (e.g., light resistance, chemical resistance, impact resistance), an ability of being extruded into a sheet and the like; and others. The polyphenylene ether-organoclay complex can be produced by: preparing a mixture comprising a solvent, a catalyst, a phenolic compound and an organoclay, wherein the organoclay is contained in an amount of 0.1 to 20 parts by mass relative to 100 parts by mass of the phenolic compound; contacting the mixture with an oxygen-containing gas to cause the oxidative polymerizationof the phenolic compound; and removing the solvent and the catalyst from the resulting polymerization mixture. This method is applicable to the production of a complex of an organoclay with other polymers such as an aromatic polycarbonate, a polyether imide and a polyacrylate.
