Abstract New vanadyl(IV) complexes of tetradentate Schiff-base dianions containing one, two or three carbon atoms between the two iminato-nitrogen atoms are described. The compounds are either mononuclear or polymeric, as shown by the value of v(V=O), and depending upon the Schiff-base dianion. There is no evidence for electron delocalization along the polymeric chains. Some vanadium(III) complexes

were synthesized and used to form complexes with vanadium in oxidation states III, IV, and V. Electrochemical and spectral characteristics of the complexes were evaluated and compared. In acidified solutions in acetonitrile the vanadium(IV) complexes undergo reversible disproportionation to form V(III) and V(V) complexes. With several of the ligands the V(III) complexes are much more stable in the presence

The Schiff-base dianion N,N'-2,2-dimethyltrimethylenebis[salicylideneiminate(2-)](salnptn) coordinates to vanadium(IV) to form [VO(salnptn)] whose crystal structure has been determined. The compound is polymeric in the solid state with ... V=O --> V=O --> V=O ... chains, the salnptn donor atoms being coplanar and the salnptn framework umbrella-shaped. In the derivative [VO(OMe) (salnptn)], the crystal structure of which has also been determined. the OMe and the vanadyl oxygen are co-ordinated cis to each other, and the salnptn now occupies three equatorial and one axial co- ordination positions. Even N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylideneiminate) seems to behave analogously, though it is normally planar.
