o-alkoxybenzoic acids in conversions of 50,42,25, and 17% respectively. Under these conditions, phenyl tert-butyl ether gave only salicylic acid (27% conversion) although at lower temperature, a quantitative conversion to this acid was noted. 2-Phenylethyl methyl ether produced mainly polystyrene (51%% conversion). 3-Phenylpropyl and 4-phenylbutyl methyl ethers provided negligible amounts of acidic products
