    A method for producing an olefin type copolymer having a cyclic structure, which comprises copolymerizing ethylene (M1) and dicyclopentadiene or tricyclopentadiene (M2), and, as optionally introduced, a cyclic olefin (M3), wherein, as a catalyst, a catalyst comprising a metallocene compound (A) of the following formula [1]: H 2 C(R′ m CP)(R″ n Cp)Mx 2 [1] wherein M is zirconium or hafnium, Cp is a group having a cyclopentadienyl skeleton, each of R′ and R″ is a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, each of two X's which may be the same or different from each other, is a halogen atom, a hydrogen atom, a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, a halogenated hydrocarbon group, an alkylamino group, an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group of the formula —O—Ar—Y p (wherein Ar is an aromatic ring, Y is a halogen atom, a hydrogen atom, a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, a halogenated hydrocarbon group, an alkoxy group, an alkylamino group, a cyano group or a nitro group, and p is an integer of from 1 to 5), a thioalkyl group, or a thioaryl group of the formula —S—Ar—Y p (wherein Ar, Y and p are as defined above), and each of m and n is an integer of from 0 to 4, provided that m and n are not equal, and m+n is an integer of from 3 to 6, and an aluminoxane (B), is used.

    The present invention provides a norbornene-based polymer having mainly a repeating unit represented by the general formula (I): and having a weight average molecular weight as determined by GPC of at least 2x10⁴. The present invention further provides a process for producing the above norbornene-based polymer which process comprises polymerizing a norbornene-based monomer represented by the general formula (II), in the presence of a catalyst comprising mainly a transition metal compound component containing a transition metal belonging to the Periodic Table Group VB, VIB, VIIB or VIII, and an aluminoxane component. The norbornene-based polymer of the present invention is a novel norbornene-based polymer having a high molecular weight and is excellent in mechanical properties, heat resistance and solubility in an organic solvent, and further transparent. In accordance with the process of the present invention, the novel norbornene-based polymer, can be produced with high activity and high yield. The film made of the above-norbornene-based polymer is excellent in transparency, is not changed in viscoelastic characteristics and electric characteristics to markedly high temperatures, and has excellent heat resistance. Thus the film is suitable for use as a condensor film or an insulative film. In accordance with the process of the present invention, the film having excellent properties can be produced with high ease and high efficiency.

    There is provided a process for producing a styrenic graft copolymer which comprises coplymerizing a styrenic monomer and a styrenic monomer having a hydrocarbon radical with an unsaturated bond in the presence of a catalyst comprising as primary ingredient (A) a transition metal compound and (B) a contact product of an organoaluminum compound and a condensation agent or (C) a compound which produces an ionic complex by reacting with the above-mentioned transition metal compound and subsequently graft polymerizing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer onto the resultant styrenic copolymer. The above-described styrenic graft copolymer is greatly improved in terms of compatibility, adhesivity, coatability and wettability while preserving heat resistance and chemical resistance thereof, and thus effective as a variety of constructional materials and compatibilizing agents.
