The ionicliquid1-butyl-3-methylimidazoliumtetrafluoroborate, [bmim]BF4, has been demonstrated to be an effective catalyst for synthesis of methylene dioximes. These reactions proceed with excellent yields under shorter reaction times than other reported methods. Furthermore, the ionicliquid [bmim]BF4 can be recycled and reused without loss of catalytic activity.

Abstract A simple method for synthesis of methylene dioximes by reaction of ketoximes with dichloromethane in the presence of aqueous sodiumhydroxide solution using poly (ethyleneglycol)‐400 (PEG‐400) as a phase transfer catalyst is described.
