The present invention relates to a suspension of colloidal nanoscale particles based on lanthanide phosphates and/or lanthanide vanadates, and in particular to a stabilised suspension of colloidal nanoscale particles comprising carboxylic acid ligands. The colloidal nanoscale particles of the stabilised suspension have a low average particle size and a narrow particle size distribution. The present invention furthermore relates to a method of producing the suspensions of colloidal nanoscale particles, and particularly to a method where the lanthanide cation is bound to a chelating agent before it is converted to lanthanide phosphate or lanthanide vanadate. The invention also relates to various uses of the suspension.
