A new and high-efficiency photolabileprotectinggroup (PLPG) for aldehydes is described. The PLPG was introduced to aldehydes by using a Lewis acid. Results showed that the PLPG can be released rapidly and smoothly under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation with high efficiency and low cost. This PLPG can easily synthesized and also be selectively protect aldehydes in the presence of ketones.

[reaction: see text] A novel type of photo-protecting group for carbonylcompounds is described. The protecting group is readily accessed in one step from commercially available material. Installation of the protecting group upon the carbonylcompounds is achieved in excellent yields. The carbonylcompounds in their protected form are remarkably stable under various conditions and can be released photochemically
