The first examples of Rh-catalyzed [2 + 2 + 2] cycloadditions between diynes and benzoquinones are described. The method enables de novo and step-economical access to challenging naphthoquinones that are of relevance to lignan and type II polyketide synthesis. The value of the chemistry is demonstrated by a short total synthesis of justicidone.

Readily available phenols can be converted into substituted arylalkynylethers, which react with an N‐oxide as an oxidant and catalytic amounts of a Brønsted acid to provide benzofuranones. A flexible and convenient synthesis of fused benzofuran derivatives has been achieved under mild reaction conditions by cationic rhodium(I)/H8−BINAP complex-catalyzed [2 + 2 + 2] cycloadditions of phenol-linked 1,6-diynes with alkynes and nitriles.
